Website performance testing

Understand Your Website Performance

Provelex loads each page in a real browser and measures how long it takes to become useful, whether it stays steady and how much it downloads. Results come with an explanation of what the number means and what usually causes it.

What is measured, and the thresholds used

Values are rated against these limits. Where a Core Web Vital applies, the bands follow Google's published "good" and "poor" ranges.

Performance metrics and thresholds
MeasureWhat it tells youGood up toPoor above
Largest Contentful PaintWhen the main content appears2.5 s4 s
First Contentful PaintWhen anything at all appears1.8 s3 s
Time to First ByteHow long the server takes to start responding0.8 s1.8 s
Cumulative Layout ShiftHow much the page jumps around while loading0.10.25
Long tasksHow long scripts freeze the page200 ms600 ms
Page loadWhen the page finishes loading3 s6 s
Page weightHow much is downloaded1.6 MB4 MB

Provelex also reports pages containing an unusually large number of elements, which slows down everything the browser does.

Comparing runs

In an account, Provelex compares a page with its previous measurement and raises a finding when a value gets noticeably worse. That helps catch a release that slowed something down, which a single measurement cannot show.

Reading the numbers sensibly

  • These are lab measurements. They come from one browser on our server, not from your real visitors, so they vary between runs.
  • Real-visitor data is separate. Interaction to Next Paint needs field data, so Provelex does not report it. Use Google PageSpeed Insights or Search Console alongside these results.
  • Distance matters. Server response time reflects the route between your server and ours, as well as your server's speed.
  • A good score does not guarantee rankings. Performance is one of many factors in search.

Only want to know how fast one page is?

The free speed test measures a page on a throttled phone profile and on desktop, with no account.
