The Website Quality Score Explained
The score is simple arithmetic rather than a black box. It starts at 100 and loses points for each finding, more for serious ones. The same working is printed at the back of every report, so anyone can check it.
How the points are deducted
| Severity | Points per finding | Findings counted, at most | Most it can deduct |
|---|---|---|---|
| Critical | 18 | 6 | 108 |
| High | 8 | 13 | 104 |
| Medium | 3 | 20 | 60 |
| Low | 1 | 25 | 25 |
| Informational | 0 | — | 0 |
The total never goes below 0 or above 100. The limits exist so that one noisy check cannot swamp an otherwise sound site. A scan can raise dozens of low-severity items, and they stop counting after 25. The limits for critical and high findings are set so that enough of them can still take a site to zero.
A worked example
Say an assessment reports 1 high, 4 medium and 6 low findings, plus 2 informational ones:
| Severity | Found | Calculation | Deducted |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | 1 | 1 × 8 | 8 |
| Medium | 4 | 4 × 3 | 12 |
| Low | 6 | 6 × 1 | 6 |
| Informational | 2 | 2 × 0 | 0 |
| Total | 13 | 100 − 26 | Score: 74 |
What the bands mean
| Score | Band |
|---|---|
| 90 to 100 | Excellent |
| 75 to 89 | Good |
| 60 to 74 | Fair |
| 40 to 59 | Poor |
| 0 to 39 | Critical |
So the example above, at 74, is Fair, one point short of Good.
Scores by category
A single number says whether to worry, not where to look. Reports therefore also give a score for security, performance, accessibility, mobile, and search and sharing, using the same arithmetic on that category's findings. A category that ran and found nothing shows 100. A category that did not run is not shown at all, because that is different from a perfect result.
Comparing scores
- Compare like with like. A higher level runs more checks and may find more, so an Advanced score can be lower than a Basic score for the same site.
- Expect some movement. Performance varies between runs, and AI-driven tests do not take the same path each time.
- Look at the findings. A run's report shows the change from the previous run, along with what was fixed and what is new.
